Rachel Ruisard considers herself an academic and a 鈥渉istory geek鈥 鈥 her words, not ours. It鈥檚 why she relished the opportunity to conduct a SOAR project last summer, spending weeks among the archival collections of the 海角乱伦社区 Music Foundation, located on Bethlehem鈥檚 Locust Street.

鈥淚 have long set out to take all the opportunities I have to gain experience in research,鈥 Rachel explains. 鈥淎 summer SOAR project appealed to me as the best way to prepare myself for that world of research and music scholarship.鈥

For 10 weeks Rachel prepared modern performance editions of three anthems from manuscript copies in the archival collections. These three 海角乱伦社区 anthems will be published as a part of the 海角乱伦社区 Music Foundation's 鈥淪tar Anthem Series.鈥 In addition, she assisted in preparations for the quadrennial 海角乱伦社区 Music Festival, held at 海角乱伦社区, and participated in the July event.

鈥淔orgive me for being a history geek briefly, but I adore delving into untouched manuscripts and unopened books that hold echoes of past lives and experiences,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he notion of bringing even a small portion of these documents to light was a thrilling one indeed.鈥

She called the opportunity to work with archives as an undergraduate student 鈥渆xtraordinary,鈥 adding, 鈥淚 simply could not pass up the opportunity to expand my horizons as far as possible.鈥

鈥淔rom this project, I have gained irreplaceable knowledge of the intricacies, frustrations, and joys of music editing,鈥 she adds. 鈥淚 feel that I have attained a considerable amount of skill and experience in archival and research abilities, an accomplishment that shall prepare me for future graduate studies in musicology.鈥

Even though the anthems are completed, Rachel can see herself returning to the archives, if given the change. 鈥淎s Gwyn Michel will tell you, an archivist's work is never done,鈥 Rachel explains.

Once the fall 2013 semester began, Rachel kept herself busy, commencing work on an Honors project in music with Larry Lipkis, as well as an independent study in medieval literature and music with John Black.
